Learning Beyond Four Walls
At Wamsley Elementary, learning doesn't stop at the classroom door.
Experiential Education (EE) is a teaching approach that engages students through direct experiences, meaningful challenges, and focused reflection. Through hands-on learning, students build knowledge, develop practical skills, strengthen relationships, and discover confidence in themselves and others.
Once each week, Wamsley Wildcats participate in three hours of dedicated Experiential Education, where they are encouraged to explore, create, problem-solve, and grow. These experiences help students challenge themselves while also discovering and developing their unique strengths.
Building Skills for Life
Experiential Education is designed to help students develop more than academic knowledge. Through challenges faced on the trail, in camp, in the kitchen, with tools, and in the classroom, students learn resilience, teamwork, bravery, communication, perseverance, compassion, and reflection. These skills support success both in school and throughout life.
At Wamsley, we believe students learn best when they actively participate in the learning process. EE provides opportunities for Wildcats to take risks, solve problems, work together, and experience success in meaningful ways.
What Does EE Look Like?
Experiential Education takes many forms throughout the school year, including:
- Camping
- Hiking
- Fishing
- Gardening
- Cooking in the Kids Kitchen
- Building and tool skills
- Outdoor exploration
- Field trips and community-based learning experiences
Students apply classroom learning in authentic settings while building practical life skills and deeper connections to their community and environment.
Adventure as a Classroom
Each year, students participate in at least one overnight adventure experience that challenges both their physical and mental abilities. The wilderness becomes their classroom, and experiences become the lesson.
Backpacks, tents, hiking boots, and fishing poles become tools for learning, while communication, grit, perseverance, compassion, and reflection become tools for life.
